understanding & combating anti-fat bias for college students

Are you a college student who wishes you had more information on weight stigma, sizeism, and anti-fat bias? Join True You Maryland for this virtual session that will lay a foundation for deeper conversations about anti-fat bias.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define anti-fat bias and discrimination
  • Address myths about what it means to be “healthy”
  • Identify at least three ways that anti-fat bias harms people
  • Introduce intentional language and frame the conversation about ways to combat anti-fat bias among peers

Yesi Llerenas Daniel has been an educator with Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in Santa Fe, New Mexico for almost 4 years. As an Education Program Manager for the Responsible Sex Education Institute (RSEI), Yesi manages and delivers bilingual comprehensive sex education programming in schools and in the community to participants of all ages. An educator and community organizer who strives to be a catalyst for social change, Yesi brings 9 years of professional experience working with social justice advocacy, education, and community-based programs. A self-identified queer trans masculine nonbinary Latine person of color, Yesi previously served as the Southern New Mexico Field Director for Equality New Mexico in Las Cruces.

Maria Peñas began working as a Health Center Assistant at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in 2019. As a Health Center Assistant, she worked directly with patients to provide birth control counseling, STI testing and treatment, abortion care, and other sexual health services. She currently works as an Advanced Program Specialist for the Responsible Sex Education Institute, where she provides sexual health education to students in the Denver metro area. She has recently been working on creating spaces for educators within the 4-state affiliate to learn from each other virtually.
